What Kind of Car Maintenance Do I Need for the Winter?

As the cold winter weather comes through Hanover Park, IL, it is important to ensure your car, SUV, van, or truck is prepared to fight against winter’s harsh impacts. We understand that your top priority is to be safe and have a reliable mode of transportation this season. That is why the team at Kamphaus Auto Care has compiled a list of all the maintenance you will need to keep your car running in tip-top shape this time of year.

Auto Maintenance Checklist for the Cold & Harsh Winter

  • Battery – Your car battery should be tested to determine if it is sufficiently charged, at or above 12.4 volts. The physical appearance of the battery should be free of corrosion, and its cables should be fastened and secured. Additionally, the battery case should not look swollen or damaged in any way. Otherwise, you will need to replace the battery to avoid trouble.
  • Auto Fluids – Vehicles run on various essential fluids, including engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant, windshield washer fluid, and more. Make sure you aren’t running low on these fluids. If they look contaminated, you should consider replacing or flushing them.
  • Windshield Wipers – Replace windshield wipers over a year old. If they aren’t effective at clearing your windshield, it is time to swap them out for optimal visibility. You’ll want to do this, especially during the winter when unexpected showers or snowstorms come along.
  • Heating – Run your car heater to ensure it works to keep you and your loved ones comfortable.
  • Tires – The cold can cause the air in your tires to contract, requiring you to fill them up periodically. Keep an eye out for your tire pressure. Additionally, check your tire tread depth to determine if they can get proper traction. Otherwise, your vehicle can slip and slide on wet roads.
  • Lighting – Last but not least, you need to make sure all of your car lights are functional. Make sure these lights aren’t dim or gone out: high and low beam headlights, taillights, fog lights, brake lights, etc. These lights will keep you safe.
